Al Jalila Foundation

Making the UAE a frontrunner in life-changing healthcare improvements
Medical progress is a marathon and not a sprint; therefore Al Jalila Foundation is championing long-term improvements in healthcare to transform the lives of people in the UAE and beyond. Our not-for-profit organisation was launched by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, on 1 April 2013 to support medical research to improve the health of the nation.

We work closely with philanthropists, strategic partners, sponsors and the wider community to tackle the most pressing healthcare challenges such as diabetes, cancer and genetic disorders amongst others. Our diverse programmes help to ensure that no member of our society will be left behind in the race for a better quality of life. We follow a holistic approach focused on early diagnosis, public awareness, advocacy and research in order to deliver widespread benefits.

About Brest Friends:

Breast cancer is a highly complex disease and there is not and will not be a single, simple solution.

Brest Friends was established in 2005 by Dr Houriya Kazim, the UAE’s first female surgeon, with the mission to save lives by increasing awareness of breast cancer in the United Arab Emirates.

Brest Friends offers support to breast cancer patients by removing barriers such as limited or no health insurance, lack of transportation and childcare, or language and cultural differences. For the last 10 years, Brest Friends has run the only breast cancer support group in Dubai

Brest Friend’s mission is to save lives by increasing awareness of breast cancer, funding screening programs, and offering support for breast cancer patients and their families by removing such barriers as limited or no health insurance, lack of transportation and childcare or language and cultural differences. Further, we aim to fund and support research into breast cancer epidemiology in the region.

Part of the support that Brest Friends offers is in the form of a support group for breast cancer patients and survivors, which meets once a month and has been successful in providing breast cancer patients and survivors with a nurturing and supportive environment since 2005.

Many women with breast cancer gain a lot of benefits from joining the support group. People in the support group can expect to both learn more about their cancer and get new ideas from others who have “been there, done that.” Cancer survivors help new patients know what to expect and what situations to avoid. Sometimes only the cancer survivor will have that perfect little “tip” that ends up making a big difference in how you get through the cancer experience.

Support groups can be a great place to find resources such as information about medical treatments, research and financial assistance. Also, information on how children typically react to a parent’s diagnosis, how to explain your diagnosis at work, or how to talk more easily with your doctor – what questions to ask, and so on.

New group members usually feel more comfortable over time in discussing their concerns and women diagnosed a while ago feel good about helping others in the group.

In 2015, Brest Friends partnered with Al Jalila Foundation to promote early detection of breast cancer, expedite support with medical treatment, and most importantly fund locally-based research into the epidemiology of breast cancer in the UAE and the region.
